Living Situation
Nohely is a single mother raising her 8-year-old daughter, Ashli. They live with Nohely’s parents and her three brothers in a small thatch house on the family property. Like many families in the village, several generations share one small home while working toward building additional housing for family members.
When Ashley was younger, Nohely worked cleaning a woman’s home in Orange Walk to help provide for her daughter. Once Ashley reached school age, Nohely knew it was important to return home so Ashley could attend school and grow up close to family support.
Determined to create a stable home for her daughter, Nohely began buidling a small hosue for the two of them on the family’s property.
Living Situation
The structure that Nohely started consisted of a 12x12 concrete slabe with four wooden posts and a zinc roof. Unfortunately, termites had already begun damaging the wooden structure, and the house could not be safely finished without help.
Income
Steady employment can be difficult to find in these areas, and income is often limited and inconsistent. The family helps eachother. The father and brothers work as cane cutters.
Immediate Needs
When we asked Nohely what her family needed most, the following needs were identified:
A safe and completed home structure
A bed for sleeping
Basic furniture, including a table and chairs
A stove for cooking
Praise Report
We give thanks to God for answered prayers through Compassion Belize, whose team came alongside this family to help meet these needs.
The damaged structure was carefully removed while preserving the existing concrete slab. A new zinc house design was then built on the same foundation. In approximately three days, the team completed a safe and sturdy home for Nohely and Ashley.
The family was also blessed with
A brand-new full-size bed
A small table and chairs
Nohely and Ashli now have a safe place to call home.
When asked if there was still something that would help their household, Nohely humbly shared that a stove would be a great blessing for their new home.
